Santorini in Spring vs Santorini in Autumn

Santorini is a beautiful island all year round. While the most quantity of tourists visit it in Summer, many people want to avoid the heat and to have Santorini pretty much to themselves.  So the  dilemma “Santorini in spring vs Santorini in Autumn” arises.  Hello, my name is Alexander Hadji and I’m a photographer in Santorini. I know everything about the island and I’m eager to share my knowledge and experience with you. But, of course, it’s completely up to you to decide what Santorini season to choose.

Santorini in Spring

The first thing you will see in Santorini un Spring is flowers. Everything is blooming: caldera slopes, street trees and the fields between the towns. The amazing colors: yellow, violet, red, white etc –  cover the island and please the eye. There are few tourists in the island and there is more space at the attractive spots.  So you will have an opportunity to take pictures or get photographed at the breathtaking backdrops without crowds. Tickets, accommodation and dining are comparatively cheap. It’s not as hot in the Spring as it’s in the Summer, but you better to have something to warm yourself after the sunset. Btw, you can ask for a wrap in any taverna if you seat outside. The weather is quite unpredictable till May. The fog in the morning may be followed by extreme heat in the noon and a shower in the evening. Fortunately the showers are really brief in Santorini.  It’s okay to start sunbathing in the end of April, though it’s still early for swimming and snorkeling. . There are fruits and vegetables all year round in Santorini, but the seasonal – local – ones will be available in the Summer and the Autumn. The souvenir sellers are especially easy-going and you can get really bargains.

Santorini in Autumn

The bright, hot and noisy Summer is over. The Autumn is a velvet season, time for the demanding tourists, paradise for weddings and the young wine. It’s not as hot as it was in the Summer, and you may need something more than a pair shorts and a t-shirt in the evenings. But the days are still hot, and a sunscreen along with the sunglasses are absolutely a must. There are a few clouds in the sky and showers are possible in the end of September (and further) but the latter are still brief and rather refreshing. Santorini in Autumn is a perfect place to enjoy the seasonal fruits and vegetables. Try tiny tomatoes and watermelons, grown without watering  – those are the specialty of the island. I also recommend a Santorini salad with capers, tomatoes and a fresh cheese accompanied with a local wine. Santorini wineries are open all year round, but it’s Autumn when you can watch the wine-making process. The sea is warm or even warmer than the air – so you will have the most comfortable bathing.
